The principals of Gravity Storage started with a small hydro plant 40 years ago in North Carolina and used that experience to develop the design of Pumped Storage Hydro projects that enables simple future growth and minimizes initial project capitalization.
We identify potential PSH sites that have significant static head, enabling minimal area disturbance for the construction of the reservoirs. The PSH power production and pump back power is optimized for the current grid conditions and also with one eye towards future requirements and conditions.
Our long careers in the mining industry required competence in underground excavation designs, ventilation systems, water handling installations, power networks, tailing impoundments (reservoirs), expertise in project planning and execution, and keeping construction cost to a minimum. The outlined work is the basis to a successful Pumped Storage Hydro facility.
The largest capital expenditure for a PSH is the electro-mechanical components. Gravity Storage LLC designs our PSH projects using the electro-mechanical cost as an advantage to create a project that’s power generation can be installed in stages while constructing reservoirs and parts of the underground network correctly sized for the final generation capacity. This method utilizes minimum capital on the front end and allows for the future generation increase to follow the market.
A reasonable rule of thumb to permit, license, and obtain the required agreements is three to 10 years or longer depending on the sensitivity of the area. Gravity Storage LLC has prioritized locating our projects in areas that will not have allot of resistance to construction, and we have included compensatory design in some of our projects to enhance the local populations acceptance.
Gravity Storage LLC will use investments to continue obtaining the required permits, performing pre-construction studies, and pursuing the required agreements (such as the transmission connection agreements). The value of a project continues to increase with any completion of the preceding items. These required items completion quantitatively derisk the consequent construction of the project.
The Sore Canyon project, located near La Rumorosa, Baja California, Mexico. The land for the project is controlled by Gravity Storage LLC, the required environmental permitting is in process, meetings have been held with CONAGUA to establish water usage, the geological investigation started, meetings have been held with CEA to determine transmission and connections agreements, and we have met with local authorities for zoning requirements and local construction agreements. Construction of the Sore Canyon could begin in two to three years with proper funding.
